Austin Boyd Honored at SMD with 2024 Julian Davidson Small Business Award

(HUNTSVILLE, AL) – Since 2013, the Julian Davidson Award has honored individuals who have made significant contributions to the defense industry. This award, presented by the Tennessee Valley Chapter of the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA), the Huntsville Chapter of the Air Defense Artillery Association (ADAA), and the Air, Space and Missile Defense Association (ASMDA), recognizes those who embody the pioneering spirit and dedication of Davidson's founder.


Dr. Julian Davidson was a visionary leader in missile defense and aerospace. His career began with the establishment of the Advanced Ballistic Missile Defense Agency’s Kinetic Energy Weapon Group in 1966. Over the years, he held pivotal roles in various defense projects, such as Project Defender and the Strategic Defense Initiative. Dr. Davidson founded Davidson Technologies in 1996, the company has become a leading provider of innovative engineering, technical, and management solutions. His work has left an indelible mark on the defense industry, driving forward advancements in missile defense technology.


This year, the award was presented by Davidson President Dale Moore to Austin Boyd, Founder and CEO of Synovix Inc.



Boyd has 47 years' experience as an entrepreneur, engineer, aviator, speaker, and community advocate. He served 21 years in the U.S. Navy as a pilot and spacecraft engineer and has 26 years of corporate experience. Boyd founded Synovix in 2014, initially as “Whitespace Innovations,” to mentor contracting firms in the federal market space. Under his leadership, Synovix has served both commercial and federal clients, securing over $5.5 billion for their customers in the past decade.

"It's a very emotional occasion for me to be selected as the recipient for this honor, tonight," said Austin Boyd. "I was Julian Davidson's last hire at Davidson Technologies in 2013, just a week before his passing."

Boyd holds a bachelor’s degree in Human Physiology from Rice University and a master’s degree in Spacecraft Systems Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School. He was a four-time NASA astronaut candidate semifinalist and a finalist for the 1994 NASA class. His career highlights include satellite communications work, classified space programs, and numerous patents in satellite communications and friendly force tracking systems technology.


In addition to his professional achievements, Boyd established Whitespace University, offering around 45 classes on business development, proposal development, and corporate leadership. He is also an active community member, serving on various boards and supporting nonprofit programs. Boyd is an accomplished woodworker, award-winning author, and avid hiker, making steady progress on the Appalachian Trail.


Congratulations to Austin Boyd for his exceptional contributions to the defense sector, and thank you for carrying forward the remarkable legacy of Dr. Julian Davidson.


Lieutenant General Robert M. Collins (USA), Military Deputy/Director, Army Acquisition Corps, delivered a keynote speech following the award presentation to end the dinner.

LTG Collins remarked on the "myriad contributions Drs. Julian and Dorothy Davidson made to our country's national defense for decades," as a preamble to his remarks.


Julian Davidson Small Business Award Nomination Process:  Nominations are accepted throughout the year and the award is chosen by the 3 Space and Missile Defense Symposium Sponsors, NDIA, ADAA, and ASMDA. Nominations can be submitted here and must be received by April 1 to be considered for the Symposium scheduled for August of same year.  Nominees not selected will be reconsidered each year thereafter. 


Nominees must be an entrepreneur and demonstrate outstanding accomplishments in these 4 areas:


  • Contributions to Business growth in the areas of Space, Missiles and Aviation Technology

  • Contributions to the community

  • Contributions Oriented toward community education in space, missiles, and aviation

  • Recognition by industry, academia, and government for excellence
